The sidewalks on this road are not suitable for the movement of vulnerable and disabled people. Specifically, according to Greek specifications (Government Gazette 2621B/2009) an at least 1.50 meters wide obstacles free zone should exist on the sidewalks. The sidewalks in this particular street do not have mostly these dimensions, in many places they are less than half a meter wide. It is a commercial street and international specifications in this case impose a width of more than 3 meters (see e.g. Improving Transport for People with Mobility Handicaps, OECD, European Conference of Ministries of Transport). No widening of the existing sidewalks has been made, although there was space between the building lines, nor displacement of posts and other obstacles, not even the ugly and massive billboards on the bus stops. For this reason, and because of the inadequate dimensions of the sidewalks, the tactile strip for the blind people follows unlikely maneuvers, which render it almost useless and at some points occupy almost the entire width of the sidewalk, hindering the pedestrians. There is a lack of protection by bollards in many places, causing cars to break in, and generally forcing pedestrians to walk on the road pavement (see photo 5, 16, 17). Of course there are no blind people or wheelchair users observed on this street, as it is completely impossible for them to use it, because of its improper construction. In short, almost € 1m (the cost ofabout half a km of closed motorway or railroad) was wasted to pave the existing miserable sidewalks, which have already begun to be destroyed by the constant circulation of motorcycles and cars on them (see e.g. photo 10), and thus perpetuate the violation of pedestrian mobility rights.
